Welcome! I am Andrea Leigh Capuyan. I serve as the Executive Director of the LPC in Laurel, Maryland. I began serving at the center in 2007. I also serve on the board for the Center for Steward Leader Studies, and I am a regular contributor on Christian Leadership Alliance’s Higher Thinking Blog. You can read those same posts here.
Becoming an executive director was a career shift for me.
Previously, I worked as a professional sign language interpreter in the Washington, DC metro area. While interpreting is a helping profession much like social work or counseling, my professional experience was rooted in the for-profit world. Moving into a nonprofit ministry setting was a big change for me. It was a big change for my colleagues also. No one knew me, and there was uncertainty about the change I might bring to the LPC.
Thinking back to the beginning I am reminded of the f the essential need for need for courage, commitment, and trust, in order to weather a change in leadership.
I graduated from Toccoa Falls College with a BA in World Missions in 1991 and I have a Master’s in Organizational Leadership from York College (now York University.)
I am a life-long learner, and would be a professional student if I could. I love exploring new ideas and concepts for leading. It’s an opportunity to ‘play in the sandbox.’
Exploring steward theology and Bowen’s Family Systems Theory most impact me. They shape not only my leadership approach; they are pivotal in my spiritual growth and how I navigate relationships.
At the core of steward thinking is relinquishing any claims of ‘ownership’ one might have over one’s life, resources, organization and team. I believe that as we embrace our role as a steward we experience freedom and abundance in our life. We are created to live from abundance and not survival or scarcity.
Laughter, deep conversation, and a warm cup of coffee are all ingredients for the perfect day for me!
Are you stuck in survival mode? Burned out? You are not alone. Let’s talk. I would love to help you discover abundance in your life and leadership.
